I wanted to build retail centres with the realities of the average income and average household in mind; with likeminded retailers.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Flashback to the 80s: Big Hair, Bigger Prices<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was the mid-80s and the prices of basics were on the rise. Sure, inflation happens, economic changes happen, but Mitch felt it was wrong&#8230;. He knew it was wrong. He knew he needed to help facilitate change for the average Canadian family. He knew it was time to usher in a wave of value and convenience. Canadians deserved better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, how exactly did a young, 20-something Mitch Goldhar convince one of the biggest retailers in the world that he could, and should support their entry to Canada? It\u2019s become one of the most mysterious and rumoured stories in Canadian real estate development folklore. Among Mitch\u2019s favourite rumours is that he pitched a tent in front of the Walmart Head Office in Bentonville, Arkansas and refused to leave until Walmart\u2019s founder Sam Walton, spoke to him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While this wild rumour certainly speaks to Mitch\u2019s tenacity, that isn\u2019t *exactly* how it happened.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Truth:&nbsp; Walmart\u2019s Market Entry<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1989, Mitch had a \u201cFuture Shopping Centre\u201d billboard on an empty piece of land in Markham, Ontario. A man by the name of Doug Sperber saw the sign and called Mitch\u2019s number to enquire. What he didn\u2019t know was that Mr. Sperber was an executive on a secret reconnaissance mission to scout potential new locations for his American employer: Walmart.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"953\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/smartcentre.joeyai.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartcentre.joeyai.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-1.png 953w, https:\/\/smartcentre.joeyai.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-1-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/smartcentre.joeyai.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-1-768x427.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 953px) 100vw, 953px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe met in my office. He didn\u2019t tell me his name or what company he represented. He listened to me rant about how Canadians were getting ripped off and how prices were too high,\u201d recalled Mitch. \u201cHe listened and seemed to understand and agree. When he left, I was sure I would never hear from him again.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two months later, Mitch was surprised to hear from Doug Sperber once again. Even more surprising was when Sperber revealed who he was and what exactly he was doing those months ago when he called the number on the \u201cFuture Shopping Centre\u201d billboard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Meet Me in St Louis:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Sperber suggested that they meet halfway in St. Louis \u2013 one direct flight from Arkansas and one direct flight from Toronto \u2013 an early testament to Walmart\u2019s thoughtful, fair, and equitable approach to our partnership.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"817\" height=\"817\" src=\"https:\/\/smartcentre.joeyai.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartcentre.joeyai.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image.png 817w, https:\/\/smartcentre.joeyai.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/smartcentre.joeyai.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/smartcentre.joeyai.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 817px) 100vw, 817px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mitch was off to meet Mr. Sperber, where in a windowless boardroom in the St. Louis airport, they shook hands and began SmartCentres\u2019 30+ year partnership with Walmart. This handshake deal formalized Mitch\u2019s role in helping bring one of the world\u2019s largest and best-known retailers to Canada.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No paperwork&#8230; no signatures&#8230; a handshake.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may not be as epic or heroic as pitching a tent in Bentonville, Arkansas, but Mitchell Goldhar had a vision and one that Walmart shared: Something better, something <em>more<\/em> for the average Canadian family. That vision continues to be one of SmartCentres\u2019 guiding principles today.
